Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • Optional: icing or sprinkles for decorating

Method
 

  1. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and molasses; mix well.
  2. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  3. Combine dry and wet ingredients until dough forms. Wrap and chill 1 hour.
  4. Roll chilled dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
  6. Decorate with icing once cooled.

Notes

  • Add orange zest or a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Adjust baking time slightly for thicker or thinner cookies.
